Pulitzer Charlotte: Power and Accountability

Central Piedmont Community College Central Campus, Tate Auditorium and Gallery

These moderated conversations will explore how media has shaped the South by shifting the balance of power, accountability, reliability and credibility of information sources. 

  • Old South/New South through Media Panel Discussion – 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
    Halton Theater
    Featuring Mark West, chair of English Department, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, who will present Old South/New South Reflected in Doug Marlette’s Kudzu, and a panel moderated by Anasa Sinegal, division director for Digital Media, Journalism & Communication at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC). Panelists will include: Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Kevin Siers (Editorial Cartooning, 2004); Dr. Eric Freedman, dean of the School of Media Arts at Columbia College in Chicago; and documentary filmmaker Rodrigo Dorfman, best known for his work documenting the Latino community in North Carolina for the past 25 years.

    Showcasing editorial cartoons by Gene Payne, Doug Marlette and Kevin Siers; Pulitzer Prize-winning photos by John White; and documentary films by Rodrigo Dorfman. Discussion guides will build audiences’ media literacy by inviting them to explore the credibility of materials.

  • Evening Keynote and Q&A: Technology, Disruption and the Future of News Literacy. – 7pm
    Tate Hall
    Featuring Dr. Eric Freedman who will examine how technology enables news organizations and other credible sources to reach and inform youth; how youth access news and the ways their resources are changing; how news organizations and others can stay relevant and reach students inside and outside the classroom; and how new technologies and initiatives (including digital game platforms) help young people appreciate quality journalism and understand the stakes of misinformation for themselves, their community and their country.
